President Muhammadu Buhari has been called upon to declare a state of emergency in the education sector.
The call was made yesterday by the vice chancellor of Crescent University, Professor Ibrahim Gbajabiamila, at a press conference heralding the 10th year anniversary of the institution, in Abeokuta.
The university administrator noted that the sector has been neglected for too long saying the only solution would be declaration of a state of emergency because the country cannot continue to tackle the sector with the same approach that created the problem.
Flanked by the school registrar, Mr Zakariyau Ajibola and the head of department, Mass Communication, Dr Kola Adesina, he bemoaned the neglect the sector has suffered for
the past 50years saying funding has been largely inadequate hence the poor state of the sector.
The university teacher said for the country to be competitive again as was the case in the past, Nigeria must "emulate countries like Ghana where there is strict compliance to the UNESCO directive of allocating 25 per cent of national income on education."
Professor Gbajabiamila stressed that Nigeria is in short supply of about 30,000 PhD holders with many of them abroad.
He explained that Crescent University was established as an intervention institution that would combine academic excellence with moral uprightness.
The vice chancellor listed the challenges facing the institution to include power generation and access road.
