Workers In 18 States Prepare To Go On Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

Workers in 18 of 19 states who are being owed months of salaries and pensions, are preparing to go on strike.

General Secretary of the NLC, Peter Ozo-Eson, told Punch that the strike has already started in Plateau state, and would commence in Cross River and other states on Monday.

The report also reveals how terrible the situation is in some states. For instance:

Abia State had not paid salaries of workers of the State Teaching Hospital for nine months. The state is also said to be owing workers of the Hospital Management Board eight months’ salary; Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, six months; Abia State Polytechnic, five months; local government workers, four months; and teachers, three months’ salary arrearsWhile Enugu State had paid salaries of civil servants up to date, parastatals are being owed 12 months’ salaries and pension and gratuity remain unpaid since 2010Plateau is reportedly owing six months salaries and seven months pensionBenue is owing five months salaries and four months pension arrears.
