Suspended After Attack on River Plate Team

BUENOS AIRES — Police and soccer officials in Argentina opened investigations on Friday after visiting players in one of the most anticipated matches of the Argentine soccer season the previous night were attacked with an irritant and the game was halted at halftime.

The match between the archrivals Boca Juniors and River Plate was suspended after several River playersemerged from the tunnel for the second half with burning eyes and orange stains around the collars of their jerseys.

Video footage appeared to show fans cutting a hole in the entry tunnel's retractable cover before the incident.

A prosecutor ordered the closing of Boca's stadium, La Bombonera, which hosted the match, while the police collected evidence. And the disciplinary committee of South America's soccer federation, Conmebol, gave Boca until 2 p.m. Saturday to present its findings.

Rodrigo Mora of Argentina's River Plate left the field under the protection of police shields.
