FIFA Vice President, Jeffrey Webb and five other officials have been arrested over bribery allegations of an amount running into at least $100m and spanning over 25 years.
According to reports, the six members of the world governing body were arrested early today, May 27, 2015 at Baur au Lac Hotel in Zurich by Swiss Police on suspicion of accepting of bribes between the early 1990s and the present day, totalling more than $100m.
The officials in the police net include Vice President, Jeffrey Webb; Eugenio Figueredo of Uruguay, Jack Warner of Trinidad and Tobago, Eduardo Li of Costa Rica, President of the Nicaraguan Football Federation, Julio Rocha; and Brazilian Deputy FA Chief, Jose Maria Marin.
Meanwhile, FIFA President, Sepp Blatter, who is seeking a fifth term in office in an election billed to hold on Friday, May 29, 2015, is not one of those arrested and is believed to be calm about the development.
Reports indicate the arrests were effected on the request of US Department of Justice.
